- Change in relationships with others or withdrawal from social situations
- Unusual behavior, such as being overly quiet, loud or agitated
- Neglecting personal care, including hygiene and nutrition
- Signs of forgetfulness, such as piles of newspapers, unopened mail and scorched pans
- Mismanaging finances, not paying bills, or making unusual purchases
- Not keeping up with household chores
Once you determine that your loved one is beginning to show signs of needing assistance, you'll want to begin discussing his or her needs and care options:
- Develop as much information as possible about care options, so you can be ready to answer your loved one's questions and inspire confidence.
- Ask your loved one for permission to discuss his or her need for care.
- Choose a comfortable time and place for the discussion.
- Stay positive as you offer information and be prepared for objections and the need for repeated discussions.
- Listen to your loved one, learn about his or her concerns, ideas and hopes, and acknowledge his or her right to be involved in decisions.
- Include others who may be helpful in their knowledge of options and your loved one's needs.
